Bridal Garter
It is thought that wearing a bridal garter is one of the oldest traditions still used in weddings today. In fact, garters are worn only for tradition’s sake.
Sometimes a tradition is followed by using the bridal garter for the “something blue” in the rhyme Something old, Something new, Something borrowed, and Something blue.
Sometimes, just wearing a bridal garter is following a modern version of a very old tradition that is thought to have begun hundreds of years ago. It was thought that to be able to have a piece of bridal clothing would bring a person good luck. It seems the efforts to obtain such clothing became quite unruly. So to avoid harm to the bride, it became the custom for the groom to remove the bridal garter and throw it to the single males.
